SSL Certificates provide secure, encrypted communications between a website and your internet browser. SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer, the protocol which provides the encryption. Google announced on its blog in late 2016 that it wants all websites to be secure.
“Eventually, we plan to label all HTTP pages as non-secure, and change the HTTP security indicator to the red triangle that we use for broken HTTPS.”
